Harderwijk "Aaltjesdagen"

Should you just want to stay around the host city of Harderwijk (all hotels are situated in or close to this city), then you just picked out the right weekend. The traditional "Aaltjesdagen" (Eels days) are held this weekend. Harderwijk has a long history of harboring a fishermans fleet, largely thriving on eel. Although this fish can be prepared in many ways, a traditional way of conservation is smoking. And Harderwijkers are good at that! Step outside your hotel and join the crowd in loads of activities, visit markets, demonstrations, food stands, enjoy the music all around. Too much to mention.

Enkhuizen City & Zuiderzeemuseum

Visit the old city of Enkhuizen. In the 17th century, this historic place was a major harbor of the VOC, the first corporate company in the world. The VOC had a large fleet of ships sailing the seas to explore and, more important, do business not only in the former Dutch Indies but even in countries as far as Japan.
Also a substantial fishermans fleet was based in Enkhuizen until the last half of the last century.
Explore the Zuiderzee Museum (museum of the Zuiderzee, presently known as IJsselmeer) and relive the times of yonder in between the many ships, houses, shops (where often demonstrations are held) while walking the streets of this cosy museum village.

€ 16,00 museum fee incl. guide

Lelystad Batavia Wharf

Another blast from the past is the Batavia Wharf. Visit the unique sailing ship Batavia, an exact replica of one of the world famous VOC merchant ships. The ship is constructed according to original drawings and using old techniques, a true masterpiece. Be astonished aboard about the size and imagine to live on it together with a full crew of sailors while fighting the elements at sea. Ashore construction of another ship is in progress. This will give you unique insight of building methods and craftsmanship of the 1700's. One of the top attractions in our area! More info

Next to the Wharf you will find Batavia City, an Outlet Center built in the setting of an old VOC colony town. Here you can have a bite and shop around for bargains in a friendly atmosphere after you digested all the impressions of the wharf.
