INTRODUCTION

On the shores of the former Zulderzee, a traditional Shipyard was founded in 1985. The objectives of the Batavlawerf are to build historic ships, provide vocational training and to present the activities to the public. By combining historic research, age old crafts and by using authentic materials, the Batavlawerf is able to reconstruct sailing ships that have played an Important role in Dutch maritime history.

DUTCH EAST INDIAMAN 'BATAVIA'

The 'Batavia'was built In 1628 in Amsterdam by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). On her malden voyage the ship foundered off the West coast of Australia while sailing for Java, Indonesia, with 341 crew on board. The reconstruction commenced in 1985. Under the supervision of Master shipwright Willem Vos, shipwrights and apprentices built this 17th Century ship with the objective to achieve a high level of authenticity and seaworthiness. On the 7th of April 1995 the 'Batavia' was named by HRH Queen Beatrix, launched and moored next to the Bataviawerf. Visiting the 'Batavia' will transport you 350 years back in time.

ADMIRALTY SHIP 'DE 7 PROVINCIËN'

'De 7 Provinciën' (7 Provinces) was built in 1665 at the Admiralty Shipyard in Rotterdam. The ship was involved in many Naval battles as the flagship of famous Admiral Michiel de Ruyter. After nearly thirty years of service the ship was decommissioned in 1694. The construction of 'De 7 Provinciën' is crafted to the same level of authenticity as the 'Batavia'. Shipwrights, apprentices and volunteers are working to create one of the biggest historic wooden ships in the world. 'De 7 Provinciën' is adorned with an impressive amount of carvings and ornaments.
